Restoring Balance to Your Body!

Endocannabinoid System

What is the endocannabinoid system and what is its role?

All of us have an intuitive sense that balance is a good thing. Simply stated, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the system in our body that is responsible for keeping our body in balance. That balance is also known as homeostasis.

We’ve all learned that the body is made up of several different systems such as the circulatory system, digestive system, the endocrine system, the muscular system, the nervous system and others. Our bodies (and all other vertebrates) evolved with the need for endocannabinoids and the ability to produce them internally to maintain the balance of these systems. It is the ECS that contains the biological system that is capable of interacting with not only these internally-produced endocannabinoids, but also the active chemical compound of CBD to provide the benefits of balanced systems. The ECS includes:

  • Cannabinoid receptors that are located on the surface of many different types of cells throughout our bodies.
  • Endocannabinoids- certain molecules that activate the cannabinoid receptors
  • Metabolic enzymes that process and break down endocannabinoids following use
  • These three components work together to analyze and communicate the dynamic conditions of the cell, which in turn, stimulates a response if needed to return or maintain balance. This very complex process would require pages to just provide an outline of each step, but fundamentally, we believe that ingesting or absorbing CBD can provide a form of much-needed “nutrition” and support to the endocannabinoid system and its ability to restore or maintain balance in our body. In other words, the healthier the ECS, the greater the balance.

Because of ECS, when we experience a benefit from CBD it is highly likely that the benefit is occurring because balance is being restored to one system or another. That also explains why different individuals experience different results from CBD. Each of us will have different systemic conditions in our bodies that will be either in or out of balance. As CBD supports the balance of all our systems, the results will vary as will the sense of change that is occurring. Some changes are immediately noticeable while others are more subtle but no less important.
